ABOUT US

School of Climate and Disaster Studies - Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM) was established through the CUTM Act 4 of the Odisha State Legislative Assembly. In due course, it has got recognition as Grade-A University by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and 12 B status by University Grants Commision. The objectives of CUTM are shaping lives, empowering communities and co-creating wealth and livelihood opportunities in economically underdeveloped districts of South Odisha and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, India. Teaching, training, consulting and research activities of the university are geared towards employability enhancement, employment generation through entrepreneurship development and preparing graduates for higher education. The University offers its education, training and other services through different Schools.

The School of Disaster Management endeavours to establish synergies across political & environmental sciences, social sciences and humanities with a focus on people-centric approaches towards disaster risk reduction and disaster response. It offers systematic approach in the areas of hazard, vulnerability and risk assessments; business continuity; community resilience; humanitarian emergency management; and techniques such as Geographical Information System (GIS) application.

CUTM has five campuses at Paralakhemundi, Bhubaneswar, Bolangir, Rayagada and Chhatrapur which together houses Schools of Agriculture, Applied Sciences, Climate and Disaster Studies, Design, Engineering and Technology, Management, Media and Communication, Pharmacy and Life Sciences, Paramedics and Allied Health Science and Vocational Education and Training. The University has more than 9,000 students in under graduate and post-graduate programs. Its unique strength is skill integrated education; close community, state, market and civil society engagement in the value chains of its offerings; and creation of a number of social enterprises that address local problems.

Overview of the School of Climate and Disaster Studies (SCDS)

The School of Climate and Disaster Studies (SCDS), in the Centurion University of Technology and Management, established in 2012 is Odisha’s first University to start Programmes in Climate and Disaster Studies with digital labs. It aims to shape and empower students, professionals, civil society organizations (CSOs), and communities on prevention, preparation, response and recovery from hazards of all types – natural and human-made. It aims to evolve as a Centre of Excellence in generating knowledge in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Resilience.

  • High quality, globally accredited academic programmes in climate and disaster studies
  • Training of individuals and capacity building of institutions on Climate Change, Safety and Disaster Risk Resilience
  • Research services in knowledge creation and dissemination

The vision of the School is to become an institution of excellence in climate and disaster studies.

Objectives

To offer Academic Programmes in Climate and Disaster Studies

  1. To increase number of courses in Climate and Disaster Studies for Bachelor and Master students in Applied Science, Engineering, Agriculture and Management.
  2. To offer PhD in Climate and Disaster Studies by June 2019.

To undertake Research and Innovation in Climate and Disaster Studies
  1. To undertake research in last mile DRR strategies in Odisha by 2019
  2. To develop a repository of disaster related experiences in Odisha by 2020
  3. To undertake disaster induced vulnerability assessment of life and property in Odisha by 2020
  4. To undertake action research through humanitarian response

To undertake Capacity Building Programmes
  1. To improve the capacity of 1000 members of the community and professionals involved in disaster management from government and civil society organisations in 2020
  2. To improve capacity of 20 Community Based Institutions, 20 Civil Society Organisations and 10 Government Departments involved in DRR in 2020
  3. To develop IEC materials for capacity building programmes


Strategy

The School believes that a multidisciplinary collaborative approach is necessary for comprehensively addressing the challenges of climate and disaster studies and humanitarian response. Accordingly, the design and delivery of the offerings of the school will be through active collaboration of specialized institutions.


Selected Activities Undertaken

  • Over 2000 students and professionals were offered basic theoretical and practical training on Disaster Risk Reduction
  • Undertook rapid needs assessments and preparation of village disaster preparedness plans in Odisha
  • Over 150 community leaders were trained as master trainers in participatory climate-resilient water management in Odisha
  • Lead member of DRR and Climate Change track of Odisha Development Conclave.
  • Timely response to Humanitarian situations: Heat wave awareness building program, cyclone response and early recovery efforts for Phailine and Titli
  • Rapid Assessment and Damage data compilation support to District Administration during
  • Organised Blended Capacity Building program on “Climate Smart Governance” for State level government functionaries in collaboration with Indian Institute of Public Administration and SEEDS India (Supported by Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India)
  • Hosted TOT of CARE India partners and staff on Humanitarian Response
